Bricks are one of the oldest materials used for home construction and other building construction. What are bricks?

1. Sun-Dried Bricks

The most primitive type of brick used in construction, these unburnt bricks are dried in the sun for hardening as opposed to being burnt in kilns. Sun-dried bricks show lesser water and fire resistance and hence are less durable.  These bricks are mostly used in rural areas or in temporary brick constructions.  

2. Burnt Clay Bricks

Burnt clay bricks are the oldest and extensively used construction material. These superior quality bricks are used in the construction of walls, columns, foundation, etc. Burnt bricks are further classified into 4 different types: 

First-Class Bricks 

This type of burnt clay bricks comply with all the qualities of good bricks. Burnt in kilns, these bricks maintain a standard shape, smooth surface, sharp edges, durable and strong. 

Second-Class Bricks 

Bricks of moderate quality with irregular shape and rough surface, these are ground-moulded and burnt in kilns. These bricks may possess hair cracks. These bricks are used in construction where the brickwork is covered with a coat of plaster. 

Third-Class Bricks

As the name suggests, these poor quality bricks are usually used to build temporary structures. These bricks aren’t an effective building material in areas of heavy rainfall. Third Class bricks, moulded on the ground and burnt in clamps, have rough surfaces with unfair edges. 

Fourth-Class Bricks

These over-burnt, irregular shaped and dark bricks are commonly used as an aggregate for concrete in foundations, roads, floors, etc. The compact structure, makes these bricks stronger than the first-class bricks. 

3. Fly Ash Bricks

Fly ash brick is specifically used in masonry units. It contains fly ash (a by-product of burning coal) and water and is burnt at over 1,000 °C. Due to the high concentration of calcium oxide in class C fly ash, these bricks are often described as “self-cementing” bricks typically used in structural walls, pillars, and foundations in residential construction. 

4. Concrete Bricks

Concrete bricks are made from solid concrete combined with ingredients like cement, sand, coarse aggregates, and water. The sizes of these bricks can be tailored to suit the requirements like facades, hidden/internal brickworks, fences, etc. These bricks are preferred for their outstanding aesthetic presence. 

5. Engineering Bricks

With high compressive strength, the engineering bricks are used where strength, acid resistance, low porosity, frost resistance are critical. Engineering bricks are best suited for structures like basements owing to their high resistance to chemicals and water. 

6. Calcium Silicate Bricks

Calcium Silicate Bricks also commonly known as Sand lime bricks, are made using a mix of lime, sand, and fly ash. These bricks serve a variety of purposes like masonry works, ornamental building works etc.
